- A nonlegal term for an investor in a business who takes no part in its management and is often unknown to customers or competitors. If the business is a limited partnership, each limited partner is prohibited from taking part in management and has no liability for debts beyond his or her investment-he or she is a true silent partner. If the business is not a limited partnership, however, a "silent partner" is responsible for the debts of the partnership as a general partner.
